April 2026

It is an honor for the Editorial Committee to present the second edition of the UMALCA Newsletter. We hope that this space becomes a meeting point that fosters the exchange of ideas, strengthens networks, and promotes collaboration throughout our regional community. Three editions of this newsletter will be published each year. For 2026, the planned release dates are the first week of May, the first week of August, and the first week of December. We welcome and encourage all submissions! UMALCA, the Mathematical Union of Latin America and the Caribbean, has supported the development of mathematical activities and associations throughout the region for 30 years. Recent initiatives include the UMALCA Seminar promoted by Orbita Mathematicae, the Seminar of the Commission for the Dissemination and Popularization of Mathematics, and the UMALCA–ICMAM Latin American Mathematics Seminar, as well as collaborations and agreements with various mathematical societies across Latin America and the Caribbean. This reflects the strong and fruitful cooperation among the different associations that promote mathematics in the region. We also invite our readers to follow the different open calls from ICMAM Latin America (International Community of Mathematicians from Latin America) and other open calls available from different institutes and departments of mathematics of our region.

To centralize relevant information on mathematical activity in Latin America and the Caribbean, this first edition compiles events, opportunities, calls, and projects of interest to mathematicians at all career stages. All items appear in the language in which they were originally shared, in order to respect the contributors’ voices and contexts.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has shared information for this edition and helped make it possible. We trust that this newsletter will become a valuable tool for strengthening our ties and continuing to build, together, an increasingly connected and collaborative Latin American mathematical community.
